Ah, yes! We have all been there, or near there. I especially like the three days reprieve…

When my oldest was 3, and newly at Montessori in Manhattan, we were talking about things that you shouldn’t say – ‘stupid,’ ‘shut up,’ ‘kill’ all made the list. He was in the tub. He sat up. Raised his hand in the air and said, definitively, “and we must never, ever, never say….”

“yes?”

“Fucky Face!”

I stifled laughter and said something like, “well, I can honestly say I have never said that before in my life..” (Of course, until that moment! Because how could I resist re-telling?)

We tell my girls that those words are adult words and they’re not allowed to use them until they move out If they catch us we pay 50 cents a word. My husband may put us into bankruptcy.

Hilarious! Same thing happened with my husband and his road rage. Said “Fuck you” and the rest is history. My kid who was 4 at the time kept repeating it, then my 2 yo caught on and will say “Fuck” endlessly… when he’d say it in public, I’d act dumb and say “puck? hockey puck? you want to play hockey, I know…” LOL

My friend’s son’s first word was “OhShit”. Both my kids have been heard saying f-. My 1 1/2 yo in his car seat.. “f*, f*, f*..” every time he’d put his hand under his belt. I just said, “well, stop doing that.” I haven’t heard him say the word since *fingers crossed*….

I also use the word “Phoonk” sometimes for effect, when plunking my kids down or hitting a ball…. Gotta stop that… It doesn’t sound like “Phoonk” when they say it….

Great post, so going to use this approach. Never thought of explaining good and bad words that way. There is a 7yo boy at my son’s daycare who is way into superheroes and so the word “kill” has been making it into our home much to my dismay. It shocks me whenever my 3yo says it and am struggling to teach him why it’s not nice.

Oh, man… this was such a great post… I can totally relate, too. Except when my son gets mad, he sometimes says: “Fucking idiot.” (Yes, he’s only 4). Even though of course we have told him time and time again that it is unacceptable… he has heard me say that one too many times in stressful situations and it is so bad of me… I feel terrible and guilty and it is the worst thing to hear that word come out of the mouth of your child, you know?
