Although I ALWAYS felt staying home with my kids was valuable, whenever I would meet new people I felt I had to justify it. Why couldn't I just say with pride, "I'm a stay-at-home mom" instead of giving a slightly babbling resume-style "I used to be a naval officer and a newspaper editor, but now I do freelance writing and editing from home while I look after my three children" explanation? To this day, I don't know why I did that. Something to do with societal pressure to feel successful, which suggests that despite all our progress, we still have the inability to colletively recognize what is truly valuable: our children.
