When I started reading this post, I thought you were up in Huntsville. There weren't any protests for the G8. All the craziness was saved for Toronto. It's very sad. But the destruction that occurred was not the protests. That was a specific group who came just to be rioters. The protesters' messages were never heard over the roar of the rioters.

You might remember in the days before the Olympics, the Torch Relay was making it's final journey into downtown Vancouver, and there was a protest staged. The protesters wanted to call attention to the use of public money and energy; instead of Olympic efforts, the protesters wanted funds used for Vancouver's troubled downtown East Side. The thing which saddened me most about the whole, quickly extinguished but nevertheless shameful incident of hooliganism and angry outbursts was that the Torch Relay planners were going to run the torch right through the very center of the most troubled neighborhood. And the flame was being carried by a man from that arena. A man who was very, very proud of being a torch bearer through the downtown East Side. Instead, the route and the torch had to be redirected because of a small group of people who in the end only showcased the very worst side of themselves and their cause. You know that expression 'what a shame?'. It really, really was.

Funny how people protest about the money being spent for security when we wouldn't need to spend that much if they just BEHAVED! Maybe they will learn from this and host the G8 in some remote fly in place that no one can reach. Then televise the highlights and play it the week after all of the dignitaries have left.
