Big brother, little sister

Big brother, little sister

Love this.

At dinner the other night my seven year old asked if his three year old sister could go to his school for kindergarten in a year.  That way, they can play on the playground, and if anyone bothers her, he can take care of it.

“Because big brothers and sisters are sort of like bodyguards for the little sisters and brothers, right?”

Baby – I’d never have told you it was your job, but I always hoped it would be.  ; )

  1. Love this. We always hope they will be there for each other, don’t we. I used to wonder during what I now call the “bicker years” if they would even like each other at all in the end. But when I got up the other morning to find that our 19 yr old daughter had set her alarm to get up at 2am so she could retrieve her 17 yr old brother from the evening boat cruise he’d been on, I about burst with happy. “well, mom, I just wanted to make sure he would get home safely”. Indeed.

  2. Oh that is so sweet! I actually do tell my older boys that they are responsible for the younger ones at school. I tell them that is what being siblings is about – beating each other up at home (lol) but having each other’s backs everywhere else.

  3. Adorable and what we all hope for.

Jen, this warms my heart. My son and daughter are 18 months apart in age and have always been very close. He has never expressed his desire to protect her but their bond is evident. At 21 and 19 they now share a condo while attending university and although she tends to nag at him and her loves to tease her, I know they love each others’ company. Your right; it is a mother’s greatest joy seeing her children be caring – to everyone they meet, but especially to each other.
