It’s conference time again, and whether you are a Toronto local or flying in for the weekend, you know it feels a little crazy. I’m coming in for She’s Connected 2012 and Blissdom Canada ’12 and can’t believe it’s already October. How did it come so quickly?
I’m new to SCCTO, but this is my third Blissdom Canada. Want to read my recap of Blissdom Canada ’11? I’m happy to share. I value my experiences and memories from Blissdom immensely.
We’re all feeling it – the mental juggle of getting done what we need before we go, preparing and packing, organizing schedules and meetings. And the earlier we start getting organized, the longer it takes. Packing and travel planning expand to fit the time available, didn’t you know? Those of you who started planning costumes and shopping a month ago know what I’m talking about.
I’m hoping to spend time with as many of my favourite people as possible, connect with those I have never had the pleasure of meeting live, and meet a few new faces too.
Are you ready? Are you worried? Why?
Here’s what you do. Tonight, charge all your electronics so you can pack them and their charge cords ahead of time. If you are attending a Halloween party, put all your costume items into your suitcase now, so as not to leave something behind that will be difficult to replace. Put a big stack of business cards in too. Be sure you have confirmation information for travel, hotel, and tickets to events either printed or accessible on your phone by app. These items should go in your bag ahead of time, then they will be off your worry list. If you have any items you have assured others you will bring – either professionally or personally – put those in too. You can always pick up an extra shirt or a toothbrush in Toronto, but heaven help you if you forget your costume or items someone needs for their presentation or suite.
Don’t get lost in your closet trying to decide what to wear. I just moved six weeks ago, and am buried in year end and kid birthdays and the last of the unpacking and move details. Yes, things are a little scattered, but what do I really need to do? My travel arrangements are made, it’s time to grab my phone, laptop, business cards and go. Seriously, people, just put some clothes into your suitcase. Bring a few professional things, and a few party things. You know what you love to wear, you know what makes you feel great. You know which shoes you can wear all day. That’s what you bring.
I will be around all weekend, so if you see me, please come say hi, and introduce yourself. I’m not scary, unless you’re standing between me and the coffee. Actually, that’s probably where you’ll find me…
Oh, and I do typically appear in colour:
Here’s the truth. Ready or not, the weekend is coming. All you have to do is reach out and grab it. Quit worrying and start breathing. Remember that you are going to connect with people, and those connections will be far more real if you bring your heart and soul and personality to them. Don’t freeze up, don’t hide who you are. You chose to attend a conference for a reason, now go and make the most of it.
If you don’t believe me, read my post “What should you bring to a conference?” and know how much easier it is to just…breathe and enjoy.
The conferences are ready for you. And you’re more ready than you think.
I’ll see you in Toronto, lovelies.
See you there! Safe travels
Cant wait, and in colour in 48 hours.
Can’t wait to see you! In colour
thanks for helping settle the newbie jitters! Looking forward to meeting you at the coffee table at both conferences this weekend (:
